Mr. Billy Dell Grant

Billy Dell Grant, 71, of West Union, South Carolina, passed peacefully surrounded by his family at Emory Winship Cancer Hospital. Born on February 27, 1955, Billy built a life defined by devotion—to his family, his church, his work, and the many people whose lives he touched. Billy was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Crowe Grant Lay, and his father, Harrison Marshall Grant. He shared 51 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Janice Rogers Grant, a partnership marked by deep loyalty, shared purpose, and a love that shaped every corner of their lives. Together they raised two children, April Grant (Nalini) and Jared Grant (Anne), and later found their greatest joy in their grandchildren, Gracie Grant and Wyatt Grant, who were the light of his later years. In addition, he is also survived by sisters, Joyce Grant, Liz Phillips (Danny), and Joan Fretwell (Dwight). Nieces include Kelli Barton (Jeremy), Ashley Hurley (Josh), and nephew Dylan Fretwell (LeAnn) and numerous beloved great nieces and nephews. A gifted builder and craftsman, Billy maintained a South Carolina Builder’s License for decades. His work included partnerships in Breckenridge Development in Six Mile, Choice Homes, and the company closest to his heart, Cornerstone Masonry, Inc. He served his profession and community with pride, including two decades on the Hamilton Career Center Advisory Board during the 1980s and 1990s, and membership in the SC Home Builders Association and the SC Brick Masonry Association. Billy had a lifelong passion for coaching and mentoring young people. In the early 1990s, he coached youth basketball and softball, leading the 12 and under girls’ softball team to an Oconee County championship in 1992. He also coached a dynamic, long running winning church women’s softball team. His players remember not only his knowledge of the game but also his humor, encouragement, and unwavering belief in their potential. Outdoors, Billy found joy in simple fellowship—whether on deer hunting trips to Indiana or out on the water striper fishing, his favorite pastime. His quick wit and laughter made him the kind of person everyone wanted nearby. Billy and Janice treasured their travels together, especially long RV trips exploring God’s creation. Yet no scenery compared to the happiness he felt when Gracie and Wyatt were along for the ride. A devoted member of Gap Hill Church of God, Billy served on the church council and in many other roles over the years. His faith was steady and lived out through service, generosity, and a heart always ready to help. Diagnosed with liver disease in 1985, Billy faced longstanding health challenges with determination and faith. He was forever grateful for the gift of life—twice—through liver organ donation.
