George Lonzo Smith

George Lonzo Smith, 89,of Salem, SC, died Saturday, October 24, 2009. He is survived by his devoted, caring and loving wife Mabel Albertson Smith; daughters: Linda Duncan and Judy Hunt and her husband Marvin; son: Steve Smith and his wife Debra; and grandchildren: Stella Bradley and her husband Gary, Matthew Crowe, David Smith and his wife Michelle, and Luke Smith and his wife Sandy. More loves of his life are his great grandchildren: Allison and Zachary Bradley, Madison and Shilo Smith, and Sara and “Little” George Smith. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, other family members, church family and friends. He was preceded in death by granddaughter, Karen Duncan; and sons-in-law: Curtis Crowe and Garwood Duncan. Mr. Smith was born in Salem, one of fourteen red-headed children to the late Sam and Stella Smith, on February 12, 1920. He is survived by two sisters: Faye Talley and Helen Luce and her husband Howard; two sisters-in-law: Nan Smith and Pat Smith. Brothers and sisters that preceded him in death are Grady, Sumpter, Mack, Walt, Wilburn, J.B., Ford, Pearl Barker, Mary Barker, Winnie Lee Talley, and baby Christine. Mr. Smith was a retired dental lab technician and a country gardener, sharing the bounty with others. He always had a firm handshake or a hug as he expressed appreciation and encouragement to others. He never met a stranger. His kind, benevolent, Christian example will always be with us. A student of the Bible, he was a long-standing member of the Salem Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he was an active leader and participant as long as his health allowed. Mr. Smith served our country during World War II in the US Army, doing reconnaissance in the European Theater, earning medals which included a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Services will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 27, 2009, at the Chapel of Davenport Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Salem Seventh-day Adventist Church Cemetery.
