Mr. Robert William Dilworth Sr.

Robert William Dilworth, Sr., 100, passed away peacefully on January 15th in Chapin, SC surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by two sons, Robert, Jr. (Betty) and Charley; four grandchildren, Angie Dilworth Mosley (Paul), Jason Dilworth (Duffie), Stacey Dilworth Price (Lee), Robert Dilworth, III; nine great-grandchildren, Jed Ryan, Morgan, Garrett, Brooke, Kaydee, Hallee, Taylor and Hudson; four sisters, Nonnie Dilworth Marett, Helena Dilworth, Lalla Dilworth Fowler, and Rena Dilworth Hamilton; and one brother, Ronnie Dilworth. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 47 years, Laure Bell Lee Dilworth, a son, Wallace Lee Dilworth, a daughter-in-law, Sharon Morgan Dilworth, as well as four brothers, JB Dilworth, Zeddie Dilworth, Cecil Dilworth, and John Dilworth and two sisters, Ruby Dilworth (his twin) and Meta Dilworth Neville. Born February 15, 1917, he was the son of the late Joseph and Bert (Hunsinger) Dilworth of Walhalla, SC, the town in which he resided until the age of 94. In his early years, Robert worked for the Walhalla Police Department and for J.E. Bouknight, Jr. as a farm and fertilizer plant manager. His experience training mules resulted in endless stories and fond memories for him. He joined the Walhalla Fire Department in 1944 serving first as a volunteer and ultimately being elected Chief in 1961, where he served admirably until his retirement in 1982. A lifelong farmer, he enjoyed the outdoors, especially working his in garden and raising beef cattle. In his retirement years, he could often be found “loafing” at the Neville Hardware store or at Edwards Auto Sales, where he would regularly drive cars in need of dealership transfers. A family man at heart, he enjoyed countless visits, holidays and vacations with children and grandchildren. His favorite role was just being “Granddaddy”. He was proud of being baptized in the creek at Coneross Baptist Church and was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Walhalla. Davenport Funeral Home in Walhalla is handling the arrangements. A visitation and celebration of life service is planned for Thursday, January 18th at the First Baptist Church in Walhalla. The family will receive visitors beginning at 12:30 PM with the service beginning at 2:00 PM. A short graveside ceremony will be conducted at Westview Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donation be made to the First Baptist Church of Walhalla, PO Box 37, West Union, SC 29696 or the Walhalla Volunteer Fireman’s Fund, 207 East North Broad Street, Walhalla, SC 29691.
