Mr. William "Bob" Robert Owens

William Robert (Bob) Owens Sr., husband of Vivian Frances Whitten Owens, died at his home on Wednesday August 5, 2015 following an extended illness. Born in Union, South Carolina on Friday September 16, 1927 he was the first born son of William Ray Owens and Inez McAlister Owens. He grew up in Easley, graduating from Easley High School in 1944. He then served in the Merchant Marine before serving in the United States Army during World War II. He married his wife of 66 years on Wednesday June 8, 1949 in the new sanctuary of the First Baptist Church in Walhalla, South Carolina. He graduated from Presbyterian College in 1951 and began his career as a teacher in the Walhalla schools, before becoming principal of the new South Pine Street Elementary School where he served until retiring in 1984. He earned a master’s degree in school administration from Western Carolina University in 1957.Active in civic and community affairs, he served as scout master of Walhalla Troop #45 and was named the Jaycee’s outstanding young man of the year in 1964. And in 1992 was Walhalla Lion’s Club Lion of the year.A member of the Walhalla Presbyterian Church since 1951, he served as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, deacon, elder, and clerk of the Session. In addition to his wife, Mr. Owens is survived by his son Robert Owens, Jr. (Carolyn) of Walhalla; and his daughters: Nancy Owens Dobson (Truette) of Seneca and Katherine Owens Moxley (Charles) of Mountain Rest; brother: Garnet Owens of Ocala, FL; grandchildren: Kimberly Owens Klenda (Mike) of Union, Kentucky, Dohnia Owens Galloway (Ryan) of Darlington, SC, Ned Truette Dobson III (Suzanne) of Long Creek, SC, Lisa Dobson Jordan (Kevin) of Conway, SC, William Charles Moxley (Katherine) and Grace Elisabeth Moxley both of Mountain Rest, SC; great grandchildren: Caleb Klenda, Abigail Klenda, Eliana Klenda, Kaelyn Klenda, Dohnia Elizabeth Galloway, Goodson Galloway, Suzi Dobson, Zane Dobson, Cade Jordan and Carson Jordan. In addition to his parents, Mr. Owens was predeceased by seven siblings: Wilma Cely, Patricia Mobley, Jack Owens, Douglas Owens, Jerry Owens, Joyce Connelly and Mike Owens. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Saturday August 8, 2015, at Walhalla Presbyterian Church, 600 East Main Street, Walhalla, SC. There will be a private burial service. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM, Friday August 7, 2015 at Davenport Funeral Home Memorials may be made to the Bob Owens Scholarship Fund, PO Box 1157 Walhalla SC 29691 or to a charity of one’s choice. The family is at their respective homes.
