Mr. Kenneth Earl Johns

Kenneth Earl Johns, Sr.,74, husband of Juanita Burrell Johns, of 14027 North Alan Drive, Seneca, SC, passed away after a long illness surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Cottingham Hospice House. A native of Yemassee, SC, Mr. Johns was the son of the late Ralph Hagood and Edna Earl Smith Johns. He was a 1959 graduate of Wade Hampton High School in Hampton, SC and a 1963 graduate of the University of South Carolina, School of Pharmacy. After receiving his degree from USC, Mr. Johns moved to Walhalla to begin his career as a Registered Pharmacist at Bell’s Drug Store, where he would meet his beloved wife of 50 years. He and his wife would later establish own and operate Ken’s Pharmacy from 1972 until their retirement in 2005. Mr. Johns was a long time member of the South Carolina Pharmaceutical Association; member and Paul Harris Fellow of Walhalla Rotary Club, former member of Walhalla City Council; former President of the Walhalla Jaycees; former District Vice President of the South Carolina Jaycees; and was involved in many civic and community endeavors throughout his 33 years as a Walhalla merchant. Mr. Johns was a diehard Republican and avid USC Gamecock fan. As a former member of College Street Baptist Church, he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was currently a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he served as a greeter and member of the Biggerstaff Christian Retreat Center committee. His joys were his family, living on Lake Keowee and being a part-time resident of Edisto Beach, SC. In addition to his wife of the home, Mr. Johns is survived by sons, Kenneth E. Johns, Jr. and Wm. Mark Johns, both of Walhalla, SC; brother, Dr. Ralph H. Johns, Jr. (Sallie) of Zirconia, NC; sisters, Beth Johns Kelley (Bob) of Johns Island, SC and Elaine Johns Allcut (Greg) of Prosperity, SC; grandchildren, Taylor, Andrew, Lindsay Rose and Alexander Johns; bonus grandchildren, Hastings Crumpton and James Leslie; and former daughter-in-law, Lynn Ballenger Leslie of West Union, SC. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Sunday, March 6, 2016 from St. John’s Lutheran Church with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall. A private burial will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm, on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Davenport Funeral Home.
