Mrs. Roddey Pegram Anderson Stoudemire

Walhalla, SC — Roddey Pegram Anderson Stoudemire died on Saturday, October 4, 2014. She is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Julian Lowry Stoudemire; her son, Blair Lowry Stoudemire, his wife Patty, and their children Kathryn and Nicole; her daughter, Mary Roddey Stoudemire Sprouse, her husband Scott, and their children Ward and John. Mrs. Stoudemire was born in Timmonsville, South Carolina on April 8, 1942, the daughter if the late Mary Buford Pegram Anderson Davenport and the late David Legrand Anderson. Mrs. Stoudemire was graduated by Timmonsville High School in 1960 where she was the recipient of the Betty Crocker Award and was valedictorian of her high school class. She continued her education at Agnes Scott College and was graduated in January 1965 by the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts in history. Mrs. Stoudemire worked as an aide in 1964 in the office of Congressman John L. McMillan at his home office in Florence, South Carolina. She was married to Julian Lowry Stoudemire on January 21, 1965. Mrs. Stoudemire created a warm, loving home for her husband and children and volunteered extensively in the Walhalla school system and served as a substitute teacher. She was a member of the Oconee County Library’s Board of Trustees from 1976 until 1989 and served as a member of the State Board, as well. In 1986, she was presented with the opportunity to share her spirit of volunteerism for children more widely as she became the first Coordinator for the Tenth Judicial Circuit for the Guardian ad Litem Program in Oconee County, a program piloted that year by the State of South Carolina in an effort to train volunteer guardians ad litem to represent children in Family Court cases of abuse and neglect. Her efforts with the Guardian ad Litem Program were passionate. Always seeking to be a voice in the interests of children, she not only trained volunteers and coordinated their casework but also assumed the role of volunteer guardian ad litem for many cases in addition to her work as coordinator. Her work was dedicated. During her tenure, she trained over two hundred and thirty volunteers from Oconee County for over 1,700 children who were in need of a voice, compiling over nine hundred cases. Mrs. Stoudemire also served on the American Red Cross chapter in Oconee County. She retired on January 1, 2008 after twenty-one years of service to the State of South Carolina and was honored by the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina with a resolution on February 12, 2008 for her service. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Walhalla, as well as a member on the Paul Hayne Circle. In addition to her husband, children, and grandchildren, Mrs. Stoudemire is survived by her brother, David Legrand Anderson and his wife Lucy; her sister, Mary Buford Anderson Hayes; one nephew, three nieces, three great-nieces and two great-nephews. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Tuesday, October 7 at 5:30 P.M., and the family will receive friends at the church following the service.
